IG David Kimaiyo extends Lamu curfew by a month

Inspector-General David Kimaiyo has extended the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu County by one month.

The curfew will now end on November 23, Mr Kimaiyo announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

This is the third extension of the curfew.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) had on Thursday given Mr Kimaiyo 14 days to lift the curfew or face court action.

LSK chairman Eric Mutua argued that the curfew had undermined the livelihood of Lamu residents, who depend on fishing and tourism.

He said a fact-finding team of lawyers had unearthed several cases of extrajudicial killings and torture by security forces deployed to the area to crack down on a militia suspected of being behind the spate of insecurity in the county that claimed the lives of over 90 people.

The curfew was imposed on July 20 after gunmen staged a series of attacks in Mpeketoni, Panda Nguo, Hindi and Witu.

More than 90 people were killed and 3,000 others displaced from their homes in the attacks.

Under the curfew, residents are required to be indoors between 6.30pm and 6.30am.

Public service vehicles plying the Lamu-Garsen road are required to operate only during the day, and must be escorted by armed police officers.
