Baby killed, mom fights for her life after spade attack

A four-month-old baby was killed and his 21-year-old mother critically injured after a horrific attack in their Berlin home at the weekend.

Abongile Sifingo and her baby boy Likuwe Sifingo were found lying in a pool of blood in their Tshabo location home on Saturday. The attack allegedly came from Sifingo’s cousin wielding a spade.

The two were found by a 14-year-old relative who had returned home from playing with friends when he stumbled on the gruesome scene.

Nolili Hanisi, 73, arrived soon after. She said they were unsure how the baby died as he was reportedly on his mother’s back.

When Hanisi got to the house she found the infant lying on the floor with a swollen head and foam coming out of his nose.

“It was a scary and horrific sight to witness and I could not stop crying for help,” Hanisi said, adding that the cousin was roaming around outside the house.

Another cousin of Sifingo’s, Simnikiwe, said the incident had left the family devastated.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa said the man would appear in the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court.

“He will appear on charges of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“The woman is still in an unstable condition in hospital.”

The family have been receiving support from local community development organisations. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
