Prop 13 Leaders Back John Morris for Assessor
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2014 -- In the closing days of the campaign for Los Angeles County Assessor, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association strongly endorses John Morris for Los Angeles County Assessor to protect Prop 13.
"Just as October immediately precedes November, in California, Assessor candidates pledging to defend taxpayers' rights by protecting Prop 13 just before an election is a common occurrence," said John Morris. "The fact is, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association looked at each of the candidates and is backing me because I am the only candidate to stand up for fully implementing and defending Prop 13."
Recent studies by the California Taxpayer Association have shown that if Prop 13 is amended in even 'revenue neutral' ways, the landmark protections up to 92% of seniors rely on would be gutted, causing these fixed income Californians to pay much higher taxes.
"Prop 13 created an incredibly stable valuation process for property in California," explained John Morris. "In part by taking politics out of assessment decisions, California has created a system where property values can rise faster than inflation for a generation while those on fixed incomes can maintain their property."
Proposition 13 was passed in June 1978 following proposals to fix real property tax assessments at 1% of the individual property sale price and limit future assessment increases to a maximum of 2% of that value.
A recent study by the California Taxpayers Association found that if 'revenue neutral' changes to Proposition 13 were adopted, as have been repeatedly proposed, up to 92% of seniors would find their property tax bills increased.
"Applying terms like 'revenue neutral' is political gamesmanship that has the net effect of raising property tax bills for seniors and the middle class," explained Morris. "Taxpayers need to be protected and as Assessor I will fully implement all of the landmark taxpayer protections in Prop 13. It is very gratifying to have the support of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association for my campaign to protect every taxpayer in Los Angeles County."
