The Capital's race for the tag of a World Heritage city has hit a roadblock after a team from the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), which visited the city earlier this month, asked for several clarifications on the matter.

Though nearly 250 state monuments were identified, with 201 being zeroed in on for survey and documentation and 40 undergoing conservation, Unesco's team which had conducted its inspection from October 8 to 10, has raised questions on some of the monuments that have been nominated.

"Firstly the team has sought a clarification on the inter-linkage between the different agencies that are involved. There are several agencies such as the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC), ASI and INTACH which are involved in the facilitation process. We have been asked to provide details on their specific roles and on some of the monuments that have been listed," said a senior Delhi government official.

While the results will be announced in June next year, the Delhi Tourism department has already begun detailing the responses required of them.

Two imperial parts, Shahjahanabad and New Delhi, have been identified for nominating the city for the World Heritage status as the buildings that are housed within are of immense heritage importance.

Officials added that conservation of buildings was not the only criteria for nomination. "Nomination is not just based on the extent of conservation that is being undertaken. Instead, the city is identified because of its universal value. Several other parameters such as conservation and protection policies are also taken into account," the official added.
