Serving up safety message to bar workers

A NEW course providing bar staff here with training in the responsible service of alcohol (RSA) has been launched online.

By law, bar staff can be held personally liable when an alcohol-related incident occurs on their watch. However, completion of an RSA course is not a requirement in the industry.

Course developer Mary Kennedy said the new online course will be easily accessible.

She said it is unfair to penalise bar staff "if they have not been trained in the basics and they don't know the law".

Shane Friel (26), who tends the bar at the newly opened Bridge 1859 in Dublin, became the first recipient of the new certificate yesterday.

The new course is available online at alcohol.ie
