Mea culpa letter leads to murder
A father catches son-in-law red-handed; daughter paid for it with her life

Who would believe that an apology letter could set the cogs in motion for a ‘murder’? Bizarre as this sounds, these are the allegations of a senior citizen, whose 28-year-old daughter — an ayurveda doctor — lost her life, reportedly in the tremors unleashed after he caught her husband red-handed having an affair with a colleague. It seems the humiliation of his lover being asked to write an ‘apology letter’ by his father-in-law so irked the husband — also an ayurveda doctor — that he kept torturing the victim and eventually allegedly ‘killed her'.

C Prakash Niranjan, 59, a government official, narrated to BM the events of last month, when he travelled from Mysore and reached his daughter's house in R R Nagar on September 17, 2014. He told BM from Mysore that he had come that day to visit his daughter, Dr Kumuda. “I reached their house and knocked, but my son-in-law Nandeep delayed opening the door by at least half an hour. Once inside, I hurried to use the toilet, but found it locked from inside. Since my daughter was not at home, I wanted to know who else it could be. But my son-in-law said the door was stuck for some reason. I went to the neighbour’s house for help. But on my return, I saw the door open and my suspicions grew.”

MADE HER APOLOGISE

Niranjan then proceeded to check the house for intruders: under the bed, inside the almirahs, under the tables. Finally, he stepped into the terrace, only to find a woman, a stranger, standing there. “I asked her who she was, but she started yelling. She even tried to beat me and leave the house, but I did not let her go. Even my son-in-law kept defending her. So I sensed the two were in a relationship. Kumuda also returned home from work at the same time. Policemen in a Hoysala vehicle, which was passing by, heard the commotion and came over. The woman identified herself as Dr Rekha V, a gynaecologist and colleague of Nandeep. She wrote a one-and-half-page apology letter stating she would never disturb my daughter. The police noted this in their diary. Rekha is also married with a child,” he said.

“Obviously, my daughter would have questioned her husband’s illicit relationship. This led to her murder. I got a call on October 9 saying my daughter had committed suicide. But there were hardly any signs of suicide,” he added. When contacted, the R R Nagar police said Kumuda’s death has been registered as a murder case. “Initially, it was suspected as a suicide. But due to circumstantial evidence, a murder case has been registered,“ police said.
