Silchar: Police on Monday fired rubber bullets at a mob in the Fatak Bazaar locality of Silchar during a 12-hour bandh called by BJP.
The strike in Cachar district was called in protest against the alleged deterioration of law and order in the Barak Valley and safety threats to women.
A senior police officer said police swung into action when a group of people opposing the bandh turned violent in the minority-dominated part of the town at 1 pm.
He added that security forces managed to disperse the mob by firing rubber bullets. The agitators were throwing glass bottles and other materials targeting people on the street.
No one was injured in the incident, said additional SP (Cachar) Rajveer Singh.
At least 380 people arrested from different parts of the district were taken to custody, said Cachar DC Gokul Mohan Hazarika on Monday. He added that a case has been registered against 10 of the arrested persons and they are now in custody. The rest were released in the evening, he said.
Elsewhere in the district, the bandh passed off peacefully, a source added.
Life came to a standstill in Cachar district during the dusk to dawn bandh called by the BJP district committee. . All government offices, including banks and educational institutions, were closed across the district. Shops and other business establishments downed shutters and there was no vehicle on the road. However, flights from Silchar airport operated normally.
