Decorative lamps on sale at Poompuhar

Prices for brass lamps range between Rs 500 and Rs 65,000
Coimbatore: Deepavali is a festival of lights, lamps and, of course, special diyas for north Indians.
To mark the Deepavali festival, a wide range of simple and ornamental lamps are available at a flat 20 per cent rebate at the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (Poompuhar) in the city.
Brass lamps that are being manufactured at Nachiayarkoil, near Kumbakonam, Vahaikulam, in Tirunelveli district, and Madurai will be available from Deepavali to the Karthikai festival.
Mr K. Arun, manager of Poompuhar, said the lamps usually have a good response from the public for the quality and purity of the metal used. The lamps are heavy and fast moving. The brass lamps range from 11 cm to 6 feet with prices ranging between Rs 500 and Rs 65,000.
An array of lamps, including the annam lamp, ornamental lamps, parrot hanging lamps, brass lamps, 4 ft Malabar lamps and Ganapathy lamps are on sale.
As for fabrics, a collection of traditional sungudi dress material and sarees from Madurai are the best pick for Deepavali. Cotton sarees and dress materials are the most ideal for office wear and range from Rs 500 to Rs 1,200. Andhra silk sarees are also available at Poompuhar this Deepavali.
