THANE: Unseasonal rains threw the traffic out of gear along the Kalwa-Vitawa stretch on Sunday night. The brief spell choked the drainage system as the discharge pumps were turned off.
Motorists had a tough time wading through knee-deep water for over an hour. Hordes of vehicles that broke down in the middle of the stretch sent the traffic cops into a tizzy.
“Every time there is a downpour, there is water logging on the subway. The pumps were not functional and the rising water level escalated our problem,” said Manik Jagtap, a
motorist.
An hour-long shower created havoc along the chronic bottleneck as long queues of vehicles were seen stretched up to Kalwa junction on one end and Patni road on the other. Autos had trouble pulling and pushing their vehicles with the help of the traffic personnel.
A traffic cop said that the attendant at the pump house would have forgotten to switch on the pumps as all three pumps were non-functional. “As they started operating, we took control of the situation,” he said.
Thane Municipal Corporation sources had, in the past, claimed that machineries were well prepared to face any challenge.
“It was the negligence on the part of the attendant who failed to switch on the pumps on time, which resulted in rising water level,” said a civic official.
