FDA officials crack down on traders selling adulterated food, goods worth Rs 1.6L seized

The food and drug administration (FDA) officials have cracked the whip on traders and confiscated adulterated food from various parts of the city ahead of Diwali. Taking advantage of the huge sale of goods during festivals, many traders tend to sell food items that are not fit for consumption.

THANE: The food and drug administration (FDA) officials have cracked the whip on traders and confiscated adulterated food from various parts of the city ahead of Diwali. Taking advantage of the huge sale of goods during festivals, many traders tend to sell food items that are not fit for consumption.
FDA officials also collected samples of items that were suspected to be adulterated and these samples have been sent to a laboratory for further testing.
As many as 88 samples were taken during the drive. Some of the items that were tested were wheat, maida, rawa, besan, edible oil, vanaspati ghee, sweets, chocolates, bakery products, milk, mawa, sugar, etc. During the raid, 49kg of mawa, 274kg of jaiphal and 898kg of sugar, worth Rs 1.6 lakh was seized.
‘‘During the pre-Diwali drive, we seized adulterated food items weighing around 1,141kg, worth Rs 1.6 lakh from different parts of Thane district. Besides, 88 samples have been given for further testing. We will continue to crack down on traders and will punish them according to the law if found guilty,’’ said Suresh Deshmukh, joint commissioner of FDA.
