Ambulance service: Raje approves probe by CBI

Rajasthan Police chief Omendra Bhardwaj had written to Raje earlier last week recommending a CBI probe.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Monday gave her nod for a CBI probe into the alleged 108 ambulance scam involving previous chief minister Ashok Gehlot, former Union minister Sachin Pilot and other senior Congress leaders. Following Raje’s approval, the state home department wrote to the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions to forward the case to the CBI ordering further investigation into the alleged scam.

Officials in the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that Raje had given her approval to the recommendation and a letter was despatched to the state home department.

Officials said the CBI reserves its right to examine the merit of the case before initiating an inquiry. However, in cases involving ministers and government schemes, the investigating agency does comply with the request and undertakes an inquiry.

Gehlot told The Indian Express, “Decisions such as tendering in an ambulance service are not taken at the level of the chief minister. The health department and the minister concerned take these decisions. If the government is serious about a probe why did it not name the bureaucrats concerned at the level of the principal secretary and others, who actually handled the matter.”
