Plan ahead: Tip O’Neill Tunnel to close Tuesday night

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is warning drivers of an overnight closure of the northbound side of Interstate 93 in the Thomas P. O’Neill Jr. Tunnel, beginning late Tuesday.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, MassDOT will close the tunnel for maintenance work, such as roadway sweeping, and wall and sign washing, the agency said in a statement. The closure will last until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

A detour will lead traffic off the highway at Exit 16 at Southampton Street, where it will be redirected back onto the highway at the Haymarket onramp from Cross Street at New Sudbury Street, the statement said. Traffic headed for Route 1 will continue to City Square to access the ramp from Rutherford Avenue to the Tobin Bridge.

“MassDOT encourages drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to minimize delays,” the statement said. “Those traveling through the area should expect delays and should reduce speed and use caution while traveling along the detour routes.”
