So many people using phones on motorway [Derby Evening Telegraph (England)]

(Derby Evening Telegraph (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ON a recent visit by car to Eastbourne via the M1, M25, M23 and the A22, my wife spotted 42 Eddie Stobart trucks.

Unfortunately, also spotted were at least double that amount of people using mobile phones while driving.

Two incidents that really brought home the dangers of using these devices while driving were a car on the M1 that was closing in on the rear end of a lorry that was carrying concrete cages which were overhanging the rear of the lorry but had warning signs and flashing lights on. The car driver suddenly swerved at the last second. When we passed, he was looking down texting.

The second was a van, again on the M1, that was travelling at 80mph in the outside lane and "wandering" over into the middle lane. On passing, we saw he was also texting.

It's all right the authorities saying that penalties will be harsher if caught using phones at the wheel, but what good is that when someone is killed by a phoning or texting driver? The only way to stamp out this out is to fit all vehicles with a device that renders the device unusable while the vehicle's handbrake is off, it is in gear and moving.
