KORAPUT: Passengers are having a tough time as no trains are plying between Koraput and Rayagada since October 12.
As precautionary measures for cyclone Hudhud, all passenger trains from Koraput were cancelled fearing landslide between Koraput and Rayagada. Now, passengers are forced to travel in buses, which are costlier compared to trains.
"Going to Bhubaneswar or Rourkela by train is cheaper compared to bus journey.
But, in the absence of train service from here passengers are forced to travel by bus. Also, sufficient number of buses are also not there to Bhubaneswar," said coordinator of Koraput citizens committee Bidyut Mohanty.
Sources said every day over 20 buses, including government and private, ply from here to Bhubaneswar but now it is insufficient because of the huge rush of passengers. "Every day thousands of people from this part of the state go to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. When train services are suspended, more buses should be made available, said Mohanty.
Railway officials said though all blockades on the track between Koraput and Rayagada have been removed soon after the cyclone, tracks are yet to be made operational due to the inclement weather. "At present, the weather is not conducive and fresh landslides may occur. Mostly, trains between Koraput and Rayagada pass either at night or early morning. We can't put the passengers at risk," said a senior official of the railway department.
"Train services from Koraput will resume after the weather improves," the official added.
