Rain lashes Mandya; chokes BM highway

Heavy downpour that lashed the city on Sunday flooded a stretch of Bangalore-Mysore highway causing inconvenience to motorists.

Several tanker-loads of rainwater had accumulated on either side of unscientifically laid road humps between B.G. Dasegowda circle and KSRTC bus stand for a long time, causing traffic jams.

The skies opened up at around 2 p.m. with rain waters hitting grounds at different parts of the town. The rainfall continued to lash the town till 4 p.m. Subsequently, water stocked on the highway.

The motorists/pedestrians had a tough time to negotiate the stretch, while the city police personnel found it hard to clear the gridlocks.

People had to reduce the speed of their vehicles immediately after reaching the water clogged spot. Subsequently, it was resulting in traffic jams on the highway, P. Vinutha, a student of PES College of Engineering, who skidded from her two-wheeler while passing the hump, said.

The flooding on the highway was attributed to the sheer ignorance of the City Municipal Corporation (CMC) in clearing the silt gathered in the drain besides humps laid near the Mahaveer theatre being removed.

According to the local shopkeepers, the CMC has not removed waste from the drain along the highway for the past several months.

“We do not have mechanism to clear water from roads. The rain water should automatically become dry or reach the drain,” N.M. Shashikumar, CMC Commissioner, told The Hindu.

Admitting that the water clogging on the highway is a constant problem due to the road humps, Mr. Shashikumar said that the local residents are against removing humps from the highway.

The CMC Commissioner assured that he would inspect the place to find a permanent solution for the problem.

Other parts

The rain waters also flooded V.V. Road in the city. Reports of low-lying areas inundated also arrived from Maddur, K.R. Pet, Malavalli and some other parts in the district.

Meanwhile, sources at the district administration said that various parts of the district experienced heavy to moderate rain since Saturday night.

66 mm

The sources said that Maddur district received 66 mm rain during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Similarly, Mandya received 10.1 mm, Malavalli 10 mm, Srirangapatna 9.02 mm and Nagamangala taluk received 2 mm of rain during the same period.

Helpline

CMC Commissioner Shashikumar said that the CMC has established a helpline in the city. People can register their complaints regarding rain-water related issues by dialing 08232-228719.
