Incessant rain has hit normal life in some parts of The Nilgiris particularly Coonoor and its surroundings.
During the 24-hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, Coonoor recorded 91 mm of rainfall. Geddhai recorded: 51 mm, Upper Bhavani: 45 mm, Burliar: 43 mm, Kundah Bridge: 40 mm, Ketti: 18 mm and Kotagiri: 15 mm.
Official sources told The Hindu that the rain had improved the storage in the Raliah dam, the main source of water to Coonoor, to a considerable extent.
Minor landslips have been triggered in some places including Coonoor-Mettupalayam ghat road. The sources added that vigil had been stepped up and the disaster management machinery was in a state of preparedness to deal with any exigency that may arise from the wet and windy conditions. The weather had also affected preparations for Deepavali. Sources in the hospitality sector expressed fear that there would be a reduction in the inflow of tourists as the incessant rain and accompanying nippy conditions would subject them to inconvenience.
Officials in the Horticulture Department said that the rain was beneficial to perennial crops such as tea and standing annual crops.
