Initially the cleaning work will be done in public places
Coimbatore: Fans of Ulagana Nayakan Kamal Haasan cleaned the dirt-streaked Ukkadam bus stand on Sunday as a part of the Swachh Bharath campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sporting T-shirts of their favourite star, 125 members of All India Kamal Haasan welfare association, got down to the task of cleaning the bus stand that is used by several thousand people every day.
After cleaning the litter, garbage and filth, they also made it a point to spray phenoyl and bleaching powder in order to ensure that there was no spread of infection.
The members of the association across the state have taken up the clean India campaign. The initiative that commenced on Oct. 5 in Thoothukudi is on and the next cities to be covered would be Hosur and Pondicherry, said R Thangavel, state in-charge of the association.
R. Thangavel, state in-charge of the association said that the Swachh Bharat campaign would be a continuous phenomenon and would be carried out during holidays and weekends.
Initially the cleaning work will be done in public places and this will then be slowly extended to residential localities.
Next month, the association proposes to clean Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital which has a footfall of nearly 6,000 people at any given point of time.
We follow the footsteps of our hero Kamal Haasan, said Thangavelu stating that the actor has already been engaged in cleaning activities for the last two decades.
"Just as our hero has stated, this is not a public relations exercise; it is a part of public work that the fans are engaged in", he added. Making the best use of technology and to ensure that the campaign goes viral, the members of the fan club posted the pictures and details about their campaign on WhatsApp.
