Romance on reality TV has always garnered attention. However, if the new trend is anything to go by, separation of Bigg Boss couples makes headlines too. After Bigg Boss 7 contestant Armaan Kohli took to Twitter to announce his separation with Tanishaa Mukherji, it is the turn of Kushal Tandon - another popular contestant on the same season - to confirm he was headed for splitsville with last year's winner Gauhar Khan.

A couple of contestants on almost every season of Bigg Boss end up as lovebirds with their mushy antics and staged love games, and the relationship dies a natural death soon as the show ends. The tried and tested gimmick has been religiously followed for years now. This has become so blatant that show host Salman Khan even joked about how Bigg Boss has become a "popular platform to find girlfriends".

The year-long 'companionship' between Kushal and Gauhar that followed their Bigg Boss stint saw the duo participate in another reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi.

Now, Kushal confirms, there's nothing more to the affair. "There is nothing called gaushal guys m sorry to break the news...Gauhar n I r no more together...love and peace (sic)," Kushal tweeted. Owing to the couple's popularity, their fans had named them 'Gaushal.'

"Really don't know what to say bt sometimes things happen for a reason (sic). #Gaushal may not be together bt love them as individuals. #SpreadLove," Kushal further tweeted.

Armaan and Tanishaa, who earned the moniker 'Tanmaan', also made a public announcement of their separation recently. "Guys love you all, it's been hard but it's the truth, nothing is worth being unhappy, there is no tan man :-(wish happiness to all :-) (sic)," tweeted Armaan, while Tanishaa gave a detailed interview on the separation to a leading daily.

Both the announcements, interestingly, come at a time when Bigg Boss 8 is on air, with a few contestants making unsuccessful bids at 'getting hitched'.

Minissha Lamba and Arya Babbar have been trying to pull off the lovebird drama, but the ploy has backfired. Rumours were circulating as to how the two, who have worked together in a Punjabi film, had reportedly planned to promote their bonding on the show. Minissha and Arya got into an ugly mudslinging, which was sorted out by Salman.

Traditionally, Bigg Boss romance has been a perfect recipe to maximise viewership.

The first season, which had the rawest lot, saw struggling actor Aryan Vaid and model Anupama Varma promoted as an item. Pakistani starlet Veena Malik shot to fame instantly in season 4 because of her romance with Bollywood wannabe Ashmit Patel. Their unabashed PDA on cameras helped elevate the show's popularity.

In season 5, starlet Sana Khan and TV actor Vishal Karwal were pitched as the lovebirds, while Season 4 contestants Sara Khan and Ali Merchant actually got married on the show, only to get legally separated once it got over.
