The teenagers who caused the death of Shaila Shimpi have been found. Kalyan crime branch arrested the two who had snatched her imported sling bag while she was standing near the door of the train in order to get down in Thane station. The train had slowed down but was moving, causing her to fall to her death on the track in August this year. The teenagers are vendors who sell purses and similar products in trains.

How were they nabbed?
On October 16, Kalyan crime branch police got a tip off from a source that the accused, Laxman alias Pappya Shivaji Khatal (19) and Vishal aka Boil Ramesh Patil (18) were staying at Indranagar, Kharegaon, Kalwa. The police laid a trap and caught both the accused, who were out of the state for the last two months.

According to the police...
The two do not have any permanent jobs. An officer in Thane comissionerate said: "The accused do not work anywhere. On the day the incident took place, the duo were moving along the tracks when they saw the victim. Laxman then got on to the train from the other side of the platform and pulled the bag out of the victim's hand and jumped on to tracks and fled.

Shimpi lost her balance in the impact and fell on the tracks, causing severe head injury that proved fatal. During the investigation, one of the accused said they had snatched the bag to sell it, but got scared when they saw Shimpi lying unconscious on the tracks. They ran away with the bag and then called her home (landline) using her phone to know her condition, but got no response. They then called up the victim's husband, who had been travelling along with her in the train, and asked him if Shimpi was alive."

How did cops zero in on the two?
Parag Manere, DCP (crime), Thane said: "We checked on history-sheeters in the area and went through CCTV footage, but got nothing. Then we got a tip of about the accused and immediately detained them. Shimpi's husband, Sopan, later identified the two and we arrested them. We have seized the mobile phone which belonged to the victim from the accused. The other accused, Vishal, was accompanying Laxman and knew about the crime. We will handover the accused to the Thane railway police who will investigate further."
Sopan has this to say...

"We had lost hopes about the criminals being caught. Then one day I got a call from Dombivli police about the arrest of the two. Since I had seen their faces and had heard their voice over the phone, I could identify they were the criminals involved."

Laxman and Vishal have been booked under sections 392 (punishment for robbery), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
