Students of the college are asking their families to cut down on firecracker expenses

Guntur: Students of various educational institutions of Guntur city are cutting down on their Diwali expenditure to help the victims of Cyclone Hudhud, while appealing to other students to follow suit.

Students of Government Women’s Degree College appealed to other students to cut down their expenditure on firecrackers and donate the money saved to cyclone victims.

Students P. Bhargavi, G. Ahalya and D. Mrunalini said that about 500 students of the college are asking their families to cut down on firecracker expenses and help cyclone victims. Besides this, the students are collecting clothes, food and utensils.

Students of GVRS educational institution and Sivam School have collected Rs 2 lakh, clothes and utensils and donated them to cyclone victims through Guntur MP Galla Jayadev.

Praising the students, Mr Jayadev said that everyone should follow their lead. He said that he was also cutting down on firecracker expenses and appealed to the people to celebrate Diwali by helping the cyclone victims.

Meanwhile, locals and students of Guntur Housing Board Colony donated Rs 50,000 and three tonnes of rice for the cyclone victims.

Students of Career Education Institution donated Rs 50,000, students and staff of SIMS Pharmacy College Rs 1 lakh.

Guntur district collector Kantilal Dande said that the people have so far pooled in Rs 20 lakh.

Mr Dande said that 1,000 tonnes of chilli powder would be supplied from Guntur to the cyclone-affected areas.
