Women's soccer upended by RIT, 1-0

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Junior forward Quiney Ornellas scored in the 56th minute to give RIT a 1-0 win over the Skidmore College women's soccer team in Saturday afternoon's Liberty League contest at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds go to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers move to 6-3-5 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference.

RIT nearly got in front 1:23 into the contest, as Elizabeth May turned past her defender at the right edge of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot towards the far post, but Skidmore goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh made a diving save to keep the game level. The Thoroughbreds came close to equalizing in the 24th minute, but Arena Manning's left footed strike sailed just over the crossbar.

Anka Parzych looked to have given the Tigers the lead in 33rd minute, sliding a strike past Walsh after getting onto the end of Maxine Culhane's through ball, but the shot rolled just wide of the right post.

RIT controlled play in the opening stages of the second half, breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute from a corner. Gwen Neuhaus rose to meet May's cross, heading the ball to the feet of Ornellas, who smashed home a strike from eight yards.

Skidmore quickly pressed for the tying goal, as Manning broke down the right wing and picked out Nicole LoRusso with a cross, but her headed attempt landed comfortably into the hands of Tigers goalkeeper Amanda Murray. Emily Saliterman tested Murray in the 81st minute with a volley from 20 yards, but again the keeper was well positioned for the save.

RIT held the Thoroughbreds to just one shot in the final nine minutes of play, securing the 1-0 win.

Skidmore outshot the Tigers 13-10 and had a 5-3 advantage in corners. Walsh made five saves, while Murray stopped five shots, earning her sixth shutout.

The Thoroughbreds travel to St. Lawrence Saturday, Oct. 15 for a 3 p.m. contest.
