Three-tier security to be in place at 36 counting centres in city

The innermost layer of security personnel will consist Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

The Mumbai Police will enforce a three-tier security system at 36 counting centres in Mumbai, where votes cast for the 2014 Assembly elections will be counted on Sunday. According to police sources, counting will begin at 9 am.

“The innermost layer of security personnel will consist Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The ballot boxes are at present placed in strongrooms, which are already guarded by the CRPF. The second cordon will be of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) personnel, while the third and outermost cordon will be of our personnel,” said Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni.

He added that 300 officers and 23,700 constables had been deployed at counting centres to man the outermost cordon, while 17 CRPF companies and 28 SRPF platoons were stationed in the city.

The remaining Mumbai Police manpower will be deployed at strategic locations across the city. “Apart from voting day, it is the day of counting when we have to be extra vigilant as the results are more likely to lead to law and order problems. This time, the chances of clashes are higher as there are no alliances,” said a senior officer.

Apart from the counting centres, the police will also enforce bandobast at residences of candidates and sensitive pockets in the city. Areas where supporters of rival parties stay in large numbers had also been designated at sensitive pockets, the police said.

Festive offer

Further, the police made arrangements outside counting centres to ensure that supporters of various parties were well separated from each other.
