SALEM: Forest brigand
Veerappan’s widow
Muthulakshmi on Saturday said she would build a memorial hall and a pillar for him at Moolakkadu in
Salem district where he was buried after being shot dead by the Special Task Force in 2004.
Speaking to TOI after paying her tributes to Veerappan at his grave on his 10th death anniversary, she said, “I was planning to construct a memorial hall and a pillar for my husband.
But I could not construct them as I was arrested by the Karnataka police and lodged in a jail in connection with some cases. I will fulfil my dream at the earliest.”
Muthulakshmi said the memorial hall would benefit people visiting Veerappan’s grave. “They can medit
ate after paying tributes to him,” she said. “The number of people visiting the grave has been increasing over the years. However, the government tries to discourage them by denying permission to visit the grave,” she said, recalling the Salem district police’s recent decision to deny permission to people who wanted to pay tributes to Veerappan at his grave on his 10th death anniversary. More than 300 people visited the grave of the elephant poacher-turned sandalwood smuggler, who was responsible for the murder of several people including police officers, on Saturday. They include members of the Naam Thamizhar Katchi and the Tamil Nadu Valvurimai Katchi. Sleuths of the Q Branch of the state police were taking photos and videos of people who visited the grave.
