Is Mathieu Raynal the unluckiest referee in the world? Whistle blower forced to hobble off in Munster game - a year after breaking his leg

Mathieu Raynal is making a strong case for being the unluckiest referee in the world.

The French whistle-blower was forced to hobble off during Munster's Champions Cup clash against Sale Sharks today.

This injury comes 19 months after Raynal suffered a double fracture to his tibia and fibula, as well as a broken right collarbone, and a sprained left ankle in a horrific collision during a match between Racing Metro and Montpellier.

"The images that come back to me then are those of Sébastien Descons (Racing Metro scrumhalf) holding my hand, faces of rescuers, the ambulance, hospital, and ceilings. Ceilings is all I saw everywhere," he said shortly after that injury.

"I am completely immobilised, because I can not rely on crutches because of my broken collarbone. Hopefully my rehab starts in a month. Doctors tell me that I could start walking and running within three months."
