A senior citizen committed suicide early on Thursday morning by jumping off his fifth-floor apartment in Powai. Ravindranath Sarkar (70), a former real estate businessman, was reported to be mentally unstable.

According to the officials at Powai police station, Sarkar lived with his 38-year-old son Siddharth in the Hiranandani Gardens area. The apartment was rented, and the two had been living by themselves after Ravindranath’s wife passed away last year.

“Sarkar’s mental condition wasn’t stable for the last twothree years. His condition had worsened in the last five days. He had started leaving the house late at night without informing anyone. He would remain untraceable for several hours and his son would have to go out looking for him,” said an investigating officer.

Because of this behaviour, Siddharth had started locking the door from inside. “Siddharth used to sleep in the same room as his father. Around 2.30 am on Thursday, his son woke up and found that Ravindranath wasn’t in the adjoining bed. He found that the lock was also intact. That’s when he noticed a stool propped up next to a window,” said the officer. Siddharth noticed his father standing on the ledge and implored him to come back in. Ravindranath, however, allegedly asked his son to unlock the room, threatening that he will jump otherwise. The cops said the son went out to unlock the door but meanwhile his father jumped out of the window.

The Powai police station was immediately informed. A doctor summoned to the spot declared Ravindranath dead. “We have registered a case of accidental death. Based on the investigations till this point, we have ruled out foul play,” said the officer.
