Even as the Narendra Modi-led central government goes about implementing 'Swachcha Bharat Abhiyaan', the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to respond to the same with a commensurate effort in city.

What is the civic body's plan?
The corporation plans to involve the public and also launch a massive campaign to encourage residents keep the city clean. The BMC has decided to organise shram daan for two hours between 11am and 1pm at one location in each of the 227 electoral wards. Governor CV Rao will commission the drive on Saturday from Byculla's Sant Gadge Baba market.

Officialspeak
"We are going to execute the Abhiyaan in the city with residents' help. As part of this, ward officers will decide certain locations in a ward where the drive will be undertaken every week," said deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) Prakash Patil.

How will BMC reach out to people?
The corporation plans to launch a public awareness campaign, tentatively within the next three weeks. This will include reaching out to people through TV and radio. For this, the BMC is looking for a brand ambassador to lead its part of the Abhiyaan. The civic body is also going to use jingles to be aired on radio channels.
"The campaign will take some time to be launched. Meanwhile, our focus is to involve as many residents as possible to keep the city clean," Patil said.

What do residents think?
Residents have welcomed the move but doubt sustainability of the Abhiyaan. "It is important to keep the city clean to avoid hygiene-related issues. We all understand this but fail to execute it. With the Centre taking a keen interest in implementing the Abhiyaan, efforts should be taken by all involved to ensure it lasts long," said Santosh Gavand, a Kandivli resident.

Waste update
The city generates around 10,000 metric tonnes of refuse daily. Of this, 7,500 metric tonnes is municipal waste, while the remaining is construction debris. As of now, the BMC has nearly 6,000 garbage bins installed at 3,600 collection points.
The corporation collects refuse using around 1,100 vehicles and dumps it at three yards — Deonar, Kanjurmarg and Mulund.
