Couple suicide in Mathura: Family to file complaint today, say police

Their nine-year-old daughter Riddhima was with them at the time, but escaped with injuries on her head.

Even as Lok Nayak Jayaprakash National Institute for Criminology and Forensic Science has been asked to send a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the contents of Sankalp Anand’s 11-page suicide note, his family is expected to file a complaint with the Mathura police on Saturday.

On Wednesday morning, 34-year-old Sankalp Anand — a lecturer at the institute — committed suicide with his wife Nandini by lying down in front of the Delhi Agra Intercity train at Kosi Kalan, Mathura.

In his note, Anand has accused over 20 people of harassment and alleged that three senior officers were involved in two cases of corruption. In the letter, that was co-signed by his wife, Anand alleged that the seniors officers had indulged in financial discrepancies in a construction contract worth Rs 250 crore, as well as “a fake recruitment racket”.

Sources at the institute said they had contacted the Mathura police and asked them for a copy of the note.

“We have asked for a copy so that we can know what exactly the allegations are. The Home Ministry has asked us to file a report on the matter. Based on what is written in the letter, we will initiate an inquiry,” a senior officer said.

Senior officers said a team had visited Sankalp’s father, Santosh Anand, and had collected samples of Sankalp’s handwriting.

“Officers were at the house for at least two hours and spoke to the family. The family has been asked not to tamper with documents in Sankalp’s office in the house, as they might be required for evidence later. A sample of his handwriting was taken so it can be matched to the note,” Manzil Saini, SSP (Mathura) said.

Saini also said the family will most likely come to Mathura on Saturday to file a complaint in the case. “We told them that as long as there is no official complaint, investigation cannot proceed. They may want a probe at different levels and this must be based on a complaint. A relative said Santosh was unwell and that he would go to Mathura on Saturday,” Saini said.

Police said prima facie, a case of abetment to suicide was likely, but arrests would only be made after the contents of the letter were verified.

“We have decided that Sankalp’s elder sister will take care of Riddhima for now. She also lives in Sukhdev Vihar, near Santosh’s house,” a relative said.
