A student from Pioneer Preparatory School, Louise Aarons, representing Dominica has won the the Courts OECS Reading Championship.

The competition took place in Grenada on Thursday.

She took home $5,000 in cash and $5,000 for her school.

Jarret Jean-Jacques was the winner in the national competition here in Dominica but was unable to travel to Grenada to participate in the OECS competition and was replaced by Aarons.

Grenada came in second in the competition.

Chief judge, Angela Marriette, said the competition was the toughest that was ever judged.

She stated the students were able to read passages to an audience which they were seeing for the first time and they were able to do so excellently.

“Our expectations of these students were that they read accurately with the appropriate speed and expression,” she said. “We found that the students had excellent decoding skills, they they were able to recognize words automatically, speed or rate of reading was appropriate for the two different scripts.”

She said the students were able to display “an awareness of stress, intonation, pauses, both after exclamation marks and between paragraphs.”

“We the judges agree that this was the toughest reading competition that we have ever judged,” Marriette noted. “This is an indication that the Courts Reading Competition is bearing fruiting; teachers in the various schools across the islands seem to be doing something differently.”

except when they stay home. they go to other islands and further afield and they excel. so there must be something in this island that keeps them back from reaching true potential.

What do you mean? I feel I know what you are driving at, why you stated it and who you are blaming. But you are wrong. Always trying to blame someone for the failure of others. Take that out of your mind. If the opportunities are there, some of them will excel. Who is to blame for those who do not excel whether in Dominica or not? It takes one person to be the winner and not everyone will win. That is the way the ball rolls.

Congrats to Dominica!!! Congrats and million thanks to Louise for stepping in and making all of us and Jarret proud!!! I knew this year was going to be the competition to set the bar even higher while following the young readers at the inter-school zone and Dominica level. Yesterday I was moved by the level of articulation, poise and diction these students were able to deliver.

Felix Henderson special blessings and thank you!!! I recall how simple you started this and then it took root in Dominica, followed by the other OECS islands. You are such a God-Given talent and visionary! Thanks to all those who made this competition what it has become today.
