October 17, 2014 06:34 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 04:12 pm IST - Bangalore:

On Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramiah and Union Fertilizers Minister Ananthkumar said that they have spoke to Union home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue of renaming Belgaum as Belagavi.

While a Central Government approval is mandatory for renaming the city, both Mr. Siddaramiah and Mr. Ananthkumar said that Mr. Rajnath singh had promised to pass the order on renaming the city.

The state Government had declared that it will announce the re-name on November 1, Karnataka’s formation day. However, there is yet to be a final confirmation from the Central Government.

The proposed renaming of several cities in the state, including Bangalore as Bengaluru, is yet to receive clearance from the Centre. The issue of renaming Belgaum as “Belagavi” has faced strong objections from Maharashtra, which is fighting a case in the Supreme Court over the border dispute with Karnataka.
