NEW DELHI, Oct 16:
Following the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag would be visiting the South Asian nations starting from next month to forge closer military ties with Bhutan, being his first foreign destination.
Apart from Bhutan, Gen Suhag will be visiting Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka in the next couple of months, Army sources said.
Earlier, the Army chief’s three-day visit to Bhutan was cancelled at the eleventh hour last month due to border standoff with Chinese army in Ladakh.
Sources said Gen Suhag is now scheduled to visit Thimpu in the first half of November and itineraries for his forthcoming visits to other friendly neighbours were under finalisation. The Indian Army has very close relationships with Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Nepalese, Bangladeshi and the Bhutanese Army have been conferring honorary General rank to chief of the Indian Army and the vice-versa.
The Narendra Modi Government has been giving top priority to neighboring countries and Gen Suhag would strive to strengthen the relations at the military level, sources said. (UNI)
