CHINSURAH: Around 14 trekkers to Nepal from the state have gone missing ever since a snowstorm hit a remote region near
Thorong La in the country on Wednesday.
More than 100 trekkers and tourists from around the world were crossing the 18,000-feet-high Thorong La when the snowstorm struck.
Helicopter-borne Nepalese teams managed to rescue some people at comparatively lower altitudes.
But, several others are believed to have remained trapped in the remote areas.
The pass, on the border regions of Nepal’s Mustang and Manang districts, is the highest point on a popular trekking route around the Annapurna range of the Himalayas.
A source added that the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal, which was conducting the rescue operations, had so far managed to rescue five trekkers belonging to a group from Phu in Manang. They are
Ramchandra Mitra,
Ranajit Dutta,
Subhamoy Ghosh and
Partha Banerjee. Three other trekkers of the same group are still missing. They are
Sunil Sen, Tathagata Jana and
Indranil Ghosh.
The identity and whereabouts of the remaining seven trekkers, who belonged to various other groups, are yet to be ascertained.
