Mayor alleges assault by councillor, she denies charges

Meenakshi Suryavanshi filed a complaint against Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan on Thursday morning.

East Delhi Mayor Meenakshi Suryavanshi on Thursday lodged a police complaint accusing Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan of assaulting her on Wednesday. The mayor claimed that she was on a clean-up drive as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan when the councillor got into a scuffle with her and attacker her.

“East Delhi mayor Meenakshi Suryavanshi has filed a complaint against Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan on Thursday morning. The mayor alleged that Jahan, councillor of Ward No. 231, stopped her outside Jagatpuri police station when she went there to inspect the premises as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on Wednesday. An FIR has been registered,” a senior police officer said.

Suryavanshi said, “I had informed Jahan that I would be coming to her ward as part of the cleanliness drive.  When I reached there, Jahan abused me and made casteist remarks. She then roughed me up.”

Councillor Ishrat Jahan rubbished the allegations. “Meenakshi Suryavanshi did not apprise me that she was visiting my ward. Even then, I welcomed her. I told her that it was the PWD officials who should be monitoring the cleanliness drive and not MCD officials.

Mediapersons were also present there. I did not get into any kind of scuffle with her. In fact, we swept the floor together. Then 11 hours later, she files an FIR. I  never did any of things that she alleged,” she said.
