In Kabir vs Kabir, punishment posting for top cop

Kabir is considered as one of the most trusted police officials of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Six days after he was sent on compulsory waiting, IPS officer Humayun Kabir still can not decipher the reason why he was shunted from the post of Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad. “I don’t know why I was transferred. I am quite bewildered,” the IPS officer told The Indian Express at his home in Midnapore.

He has been replaced by C Sudhakar, deputy commissioner, Barrackpore Police. In compulsory waiting, considered a punishment in official circles, an officer is not given any post but continues to receive salary.

His removal has created a stir in the administrative and bureaucratic circles in West Bengal especially as Kabir is considered as one of the most trusted police officials of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

However, TMC leader from Murshidabad and former minister Humayun Kabir claims his namesake police official has been punished for “hobnobbing” with Berhampur MP and state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. “The IPS officer met Chowdhury secretly on a couple of occasions and I informed Didi about this. In fact, he was serving the interests of the Congress,” he told The Indian Express.

The officer, however, denied the allegation. “We have never met, let alone having any secret meeting,” the IPS officer said. When contacted, Chowdhury refused to comment.

Festive offer

Sources, meanwhile, claim that the IPS officer is being punished for threatening to arrest his namesake former minister who led a mob of TMC workers on October 9 and ransacked Shaktinagar police station. The TMC leader was demanding that the police lodge an FIR in the case of an unnatural death of a party worker.
