Shilton leads on a morning of low scores

Following the morning field of the second round at the South Pacific Open Championship, New Zealander Brad Shilton has a two shot lead.

Following the morning field of the second round at the South Pacific Open Championship, New Zealander Brad Shilton has a two shot lead.

Starting the day four shots off the lead, Shilton fired off a bogey free round of 6-under the card to move to the top of the leaderboard.

"I probably didn’t play as well as I did yesterday but I made more putts. Six birdies and no bogeys is pretty good," said Shilton.

Good memories have started to flood back for Shilton who won the South Pacific Open Championship in 2012.

"I have had quite a few good years here, not just the year I won," said Shilton.

"Obviously coming back to a place where you have won is always nice, for some reason I seem to play well here so hopefully that continues."

The round of the morning belonged to New South Wales Professional Mitchell Brown and New Zealand amateur Luke Toomey.

The pair firing rounds of 7-under 64 to ensure they’re safely into the weekend rounds.

Playing some of his best golf in recent times, Brown is taking an attacking approach to the Tina Golf Course.

"I played a bit more aggressive today, I didn’t really know where I was going yesterday, today I took it on and it worked out pretty well," said Brown who reeled off nine birdies and a double bogey in his second round.

"I think I was giving the course too much respect yesterday, if you play aggressive then you can make a lot of birdies which makes up for the bogeys."

"This is the best I have been for quite a while, so I’ll keep playing the way I am and hopefully it works out."

This is Toomey’s second year competing as an amateur in the South Pacific Open and he is happy to make his first weekend appearance.

"I knew that I was probably around the cut mark when I started today so getting off to a good start was crucial," said Toomey who made the turn in 3-under.

"I would put my better scores this year down to being a better player, I feel like I have come a long way in the last year."

"I could barely hold the club standing on the first tee last year; I am calmer this year."

The afternoon field is now on course.
