Classes at Maharaja’s College here will resume on Thursday after remaining suspended for almost a week following clashes between rival student organisations.

A meeting of the Parent Teacher Association held on Wednesday accepted the decisions recommended by the District Collector and the college Principal to restore peace on the campus. Classes were suspended from October 9 after three students were injured in clashes between members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and Kerala Students Union (KSU).

Principal T.V. Francy pointed out that students must bring their identity cards to enter the campus. Teachers will be part of the team that will check the identify cards. Police personnel will also be deployed at all entry points. The verification of identity cards would continue for two weeks as part of the series of measures being initiated to implement the code of conduct for students on the campus.

A separate space will be earmarked for keeping boards and materials put up by student organisations. No such material will be allowed along the walkways inside the campus. The union office will remain shut and the Principal will be the custodian of the room.

The college authorities will step up vigil at hostels. Nobody from outside will be allowed to enter the hostels. The Principal will take steps to ensure the smooth conduct of classes besides checking the attendance of teachers and students to step up the quality of academic activities on the campus.

A request by student organisations to revoke the suspension of students, whom they claimed to have not participated in the clashes, will be taken based on the report to be submitted by a three-member committee involving faculty members.

Cases registered

Central Police have registered a case against activists of Kerala Students Union at Government Law College based on a complaint by Students Federation of India that their member was attacked by KSU activists on Wednesday.

KSU denied the allegation and blamed the SFI activists for pelting stones at the rally led by union president V. S. Joy when it was accorded a reception at Govt Law College. The police said an activist of the SFI was admitted at a hospital after the attack.
