The Khar police arrested a con man who has been cheating people by luring them with offers of top jobs.

Navid Khan, 34, a native of Chennai, allegedly cheated several people from Chennai, Goa and Mumbai of amounts that, by police estimates, runs into several crores.

According to the police, Khan posed as the owner of a group of companies called Bluebird International (BBI) Group which had interests in construction and entertainment, besides other businesses. He impressed gullible people with his flashy lifestyle and smooth talk, persuading them to part with large sums as investments in projects he was to launch, and in which he promised them top, highpaying positions.

“Khan targeted rich, ambitious people. In April, he moved from Delhi to Khar with his wife and four daughters, and over the next few months began meeting people and offering them well-paying jobs,” said API Shashikant Padawe, the investigating officer in the case. “To buttress claims of his stature, Khan roamed around with 10 bodyguards at all times, the entourage travelling in swanky cars.”

One of Khan’s victims, Swarup Raj Medura, a choreographer and judge in aMarathi reality show, was offered the job of a director in ‘BBI Movies’, which eventually led to Khan’s arrest.

“After a few months of talks with Medura, Khan asked to borrow his Volkswagen worth around Rs 25 lakh. Khan claimed that he had to part with his own car, and needed personal transport until a car he had booked was delivered to him,” said Padawe.

In September, Khan and his family disappeared along with Medura’s car. However, in early October, one of Khan’s bodyguards, irate over nonpayment of dues, informed a friend of Medura who Khan had similarly tried to con, about his whereabouts. Based on the information, the Khar police went to Pathankot in Punjab.

“Khan is in judicial custody. We informed police in Chandigarh and Chennai who will come here to take custody of him,” said Senior Inspector Dattatray Bhargude of the Khar police.
