Third language: Govt asks KVs to not replace Sanskrit with German

The ministry also told the bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw that the MoU had “not been referred to the HRD ministry at any stage”.

Following a litigation by the Sanskrit Shikshak Sangh against alleged “replacement” of Sanskrit with foreign languages in Kendriya Vidyalayas, the HRD Ministry has asked the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan to reconsider its decision. The KV schools will now not offer foreign languages as third language.

Sanskrit teachers had moved Delhi High Court alleging that KVS had introduced German as a third language in place of Sanskrit against the education policy. The HRD ministry in an affidavit filed Wednesday said it had asked the KVS to reconsider its decision and bring it in line with the National Education Policy 1968, which prescribes a three language formula.

“MoU between KVS and Goethe Institute-Max Mueller Bhawan for identifying and training Sanskrit teachers as German teachers has not been renewed and the matter has been remitted back to the KVS for consideration by its board of Governors de novo so as to align it with the provisions if the National Policy on Education, 1968b and the National Curriculum Framework, 2005,” the HRD ministry has said.

The ministry also told the bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw that the MoU had “not been referred to the HRD ministry at any stage”.
