Gisele Bündchen is a modern day Gatsby girl for new Chanel ad
Supermodel Gisele Bündchen channels a The Great Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan in Chanel's highly anticipated mini-film.
The Brazilian beauty was shot by famed director Baz Luhrmann for the new commercial, who knows the doomed love story well as he brought it to the big screen last year with stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan taking on the lead roles.
In the Chanel No. 5 film-commercial, titled The One That I Want, Gisele joins actor Michiel Huisman in a mysterious tale of love, surfing, and the allure Chanel glamour.
"Well, there's a bit of that," Baz mused to The Telegraph, of comparisons to The Great Gatsby.
He previously worked with friend Nicole Kidman on a Chanel ad, which echoed another one of his movies Moulin Rouge!, which the Australian actress starred in.
"Or at least that's what a lot of people said to me at the time. I can see why they thought that. I'd been working on Moulin Rouge! so long, it was in my bloodstream," he smiled.
The unfolding love story in Gisele's advert is set against the backdrop of singer Lo-Fang's rendition of You're the One That I Want from musical Grease.
It features the supermodel in a long sleeve wetsuit, adorned with the number 5 as she surfs on a Chanel board.
"They [Gisele and mystery husband] live in the Hamptons. They cross that same bridge The Great Gatsby characters the Buchanans do. They spend time in New York nightclubs. They've hit a spot in their marriage. Does Daisy love her husband or not? That's the question Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald leaves unanswered… but, really, this is about updating what we did with Nicole.
"Back then it seemed right to put work at the forefront. Now? It seemed more honest for her to have doubts. The idea of having it all and what that means seems interesting…" he added of the themes behind the luxurious ad.
