NEW DELHI: Cyclone Hudhud came as a blessing in disguise for the northern parts of the country which had been reeling under exceptionally high temperatures at this time of the year.
Due to light rain in parts of the city on Tuesday morning, accompanied by a cool breeze and the absence of sunlight almost through the day, the maximum temperature dipped four degrees below normal to 29 degrees Celsius.

This is the first time this month that the maximum temperature has gone below 30 degrees Celsius.
The city recorded 1.6 mm rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Ayanagar saw the heaviest rain with 4.6 mm. Palam recorded the highest maximum temperature with 30.3 degrees Celsius while Pusa was the coolest with a maximum of just 27.1 degrees Celsius. Due to the cloud cover in the morning, the minimum temperature was two degrees above normal at 21.8 degrees Celsius.
“On Tuesday afternoon, the depression had moved in a north-northwestwards direction and was located over east Uttar Pradesh, close to the north of Fursatganj. It is expected to move further northnortheastwards by Tuesday night and weaken considerably. This system infused a lot of moisture into the atmosphere over the northern parts of the country. Coupled with this, there is a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. This has introduced more moisture into the atmosphere, leading to cloud formation,” said a Met department official.
Met officials said that the weather was not likely to continue like this since the depression was weakening at a rapid rate and the WD was expected to move eastwards shortly.
“With this, the moisture feed over northwest India could reduce substantially. While there may be light isolated showers in some parts of the city till Wednesday morning, the cooler northwesterly winds will replace the easterly winds in a day or two which will then start reducing the temperature gradually across northwest India. Day temperature will again rise by a few degrees and stay in the 30-35 degrees bracket,” said an official.
