Letters to the editor: Not by landfills

Waste management must be addressed as a priority.

This refers to ‘Sanitation and state capacity’ by Akshay Mangla (IE, October 14). I couldn’t agree more with the writer on why “Swachh Bharat must go beyond building physical infrastructure”. Cooperation across departments as well as roping in civic bodies and, most importantly, citizens remain the most critical bottlenecks for many of the government’s abhiyans. Waste management must be addressed as a priority. Issues like recycling and processing domestic and commercial electronic waste, which is growing exponentially, require a more sophisticated approach than landfill dumping.

The recent remarks of Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, that raising the marriage age to 25 could cure child malnutrition, are ridiculous. What’s more unfortunate and pathetic is his easy-going approach and shirking of responsibility for his state’s poverty and illiteracy. It is time for radical solutions to be adopted to fight poverty and social inequality. In the past, too, he has made irresponsible and controversial remarks. He should also stop eulogising or comparing himself to poor people. He is more equal than others are.

Pot, kettle
DMK chief M. Karunanidhi has blamed the AIADMK dispensation for the impending closure of the Nokia unit at Sriperumpudur, and called on the state government to take over the factory. He has expressed concern that the unit, which he claims was “brought” to the state by former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran, is in dire straits. But the DMK, which was part of the UPA, is responsible for the company’s predicament. It was the UPA government that slapped unreasonable tax demands on the company.

Stark contrast
The main difference between the handling of the flood situation in J&K and the response to Hudhud is that in the case of the cyclone, the government was warned and there were proper monitoring systems in place. The J&K state government enjoyed no such privileges. Floods remain a perpetual problem in many northern and northeastern states. The Central government must facilitate the employment of the latest technologies for flood management, too.

Mighty heart
Apropos ‘Malala,  despite Pakistan’ (IE,  October 14) by Khaled Ahmed, Malala paid a  heavy price for her activism. She nearly lost her life. She may now have to spend the rest of her life outside her country of birth. Though it may be difficult for PM Nawaz Sharif to attend the award ceremony in Oslo.
