Months after the Lieutenant-Governor directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to incorporate a traffic plan at the entry and exit of the proposed underpass at Ashram Chowk, the land owning agency has revised its decongestion plan for the chowk, and in a new proposal, studied the plan between Bhogal and Badarpur border.

The proposal is likely to be submitted to UTTIPEC [Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre] by October-end.

At the 47th governing body meeting held by Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung on June 25, the PWD had suggested that the underpass below Mathura Road (NH 2) would pass through the Metro station under construction at the Ashram intersection. The proposal was based on a study between the Rajdoot Hotel and Ishwar Nagar corridor.

According to PWD officials, the new plan is ready and will be submitted to UTTIPEC by the end of this month. The corridor will begin at the crossing at the New Delhi railway station and run till the New Friends Colony (NFC) and Ishwar Nagar junctions. The new plan will analyse how to decongest the intersection opposite Apollo Hospital till Madanpur Khadar, all the way to Aligaon.

Festive offer

“The plan, if approved, will include flyovers and foot overbridges for pedestrians and vehicles. The plan also comprises an underpass to ensure signal-free movement up till Badarpur. The plan will include decongesting the intersection outside Apollo Hospital and the NFC and Ishwar Nagar junctions” a PWD official said.

At the the governing body meeting, attended by representatives of Traffic police, UTTIPEC and PWD, the plan was objected to on the grounds that there were no suggestions on how the increase in traffic volume and congestion at the NFC crossing leading to the Modi Mill flyover, would be addressed.

Sources said the body then decided that the PWD would work out a comprehensive proposal and examine the entire corridor between Nizamuddin and Badarpur border.
