Canada minister says committed to contain Sikh radical elements

Both the leaders on Tuesday agreed that counter-terrorism was an important part of the bilateral cooperation.

In response to New Delhi’s concerns over activities of pro-Khalistan elements in Canada, visiting Foreign Minister John Baird on Tuesday told his India counterpart, Sushma Swa-raj, that his country takes the “threat of incitement” by radical elements “very seriously”.

During his meeting with Swaraj, Baird recalled how the 1985 Kanishka bombing incident “deeply affected” him when he was young, and said his country has since then come a long way in acting against terrorists. “He acknowledged our concerns in terms of radical elements perhaps misusing opportunities available in Canada,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said.

Both the leaders on Tuesday agreed that counter-terrorism was an important part of the bilateral cooperation. “We see natural synergy and trem-endous potential for a deepening engagement in several areas of mutual interest, including energy, education, skill development, trade and investment, nuclear cooperation, to name a few,” Swaraj said, during the second round of strategic dialogue. The two countries also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in defence.

Noting that improved relations with India was a priority for Canada, Baird said these were exciting times for India and Canada to engage and enhance its partnership with India.
