Akshara Singh: I don't pay attention to link-up rumours
She has been in the industry for only three-and-a-half years, but Akshara Singh is now one of the most sought-after leading ladies of Bhojpuri cinema following back-to-back hits. The actress talks to Ranchi Times about her childhood, Bhojpuri cinema's coming of age and why she isn't really bothered by rumours about her link-ups.
Your parents were very active in the theatre scene.
Did that help in shaping your career?
I have dim memories of my parents taking me to the theatre, either to act or just sit and watch their shows. I spent my childhood in various places, including Patna, Delhi and Nepal.
You must have always wanted to be an actress...
Not really. In fact, I never thought I would end up becoming an actress. It happened quite by chance. When we were living in Patna, Ravi Kishanji, among other film personalities, would visit our house regularly. He was in the process of making Satyamev Jayate and was actively looking for a fresh face to play the lead. So, he asked my father if I could give it a try. It was a huge thing for me to start my career opposite such a renowned star and I readily accepted.

You have worked with the top guns of Bhojpuri cinema and have earned accolades for your work. How has the journey been so far?
I've always focused on the kind of roles I do, instead of getting nervous about how to face the camera. Apart from that, I consider myself lucky that only positive people have crossed my path in the industry so far.
Has the Bhojpuri film industry evolved over the years?
There was a time when Bhojpuri cinema ranked last among all industries. But that is not the case now. Issue-based movies like Satyamev Jayate and Dekh Ke have boosted our image across industries. That's the reason why Bhojpuri actors are getting offers to work even in movies down south.
Your films Pratigya 2 and Aye Balma Biharwalla with Khesari Lal Yadav have been big hits. What's next?
I'm working on two movies as of now and both star Khesari in the lead. While in Saathiya, you'll see me playing the role of a spoilt rich brat, in the other film I am essaying the role of a harassed girl.
There are rumours about your growing closeness with Khesari...
Ab industry mein hoon toh itna toh sunna hi padega. I'm a very carefree kind of person and don't pay much attention to rumours. Jab sahi mein kuchh hoga to sabke saamne aa hi jayega.
