As agitations continue at the Jadavpur University, vice chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty stayed from the varsity for the second day on Tuesday as the university reopened post the Puja vacation.
Asked if he was staying away because of health reasons, he told The Indian Express, “There is no problem with my health. I don’t want to comment why I have not come to office or when I will resume office at JU. All I can say is that I will not come in today.”
Referring to state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee’s comments on Tuesday that he did not approve of the VC working from outside, he said, “I don’t want to react to that.”
Nandini Mukherjee, a professor of computer science and engineering department, said, “Owing to the absence of the VC when he is not taken a leave technically and have not deputed anyone in his place, it is getting difficult for us to operate here.”
The VC, however, maintained, “There has been no administrative problem at all. It is only that I am not present at the university physically but I am doing all the work that I am supposed to do. People are getting in touch with me over phone in case there is a stumbling block and those are being sorted out.”
Meanwhile, groups of students continued with their sit-in demonstration in front of the Aurobindo Bhavan on Tuesday. “We will continue with the demonstration and class boycott till our next general body meeting,” said Chiranjeet Ghosh, general secretary, Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU).
