Fake resumés torment club hopefuls
Lies made long ago ruin it for 20 Bangalore Club applicants

An applicant in the queue since 1999 overnight gave up on his claim to have passed SSLC. Another one had laid claims to a B.Com and a B.L, but a letter has now come from his proposer saying the B.L. was an exaggeration. A ‘B.Tech’ candidate confessed to the mysterious disappearance of his certificate, though a ‘B.Sc’ applicant was the most inventive — he wrote three letters in quick succession saying he has applied to his college for the certificate. A PGDBM holder has suddenly realised he has not completed the course. Others have sought more time.

As Bangalore Club begins the vetting process for admitting new members, many long-term applicants are being exposed as resumé padders. As reported (Elite city clubs double their entrance fees, BM, Oct 10), the club had doubled its entrance fee for new members from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh recently after a gap of five years. Following the hike, letters were sent out to applicants wait-listed from 2009 (some of whom had applied as early as 1998) to provide documents supporting the claims they had made in their application forms submitted years ago. It was then discovered that at least 20 applicants had taken a very liberal view of their educational qualifications, often simply to make an impression. In fact, there’s no minimum qualification for the membership.

STRINGENT PROCESS

The Club management has taken a dim view of the fake claimants, and has declined memberships to about 20 of them. Many of them had been in the queue for more than 15 years. A senior member explained the process to Bangalore Mirror: “Personal details were entered in the already submitted applications. Updated information and supporting documents are a must before the interview. Once the documents are received, the candidate has to be proposed by a member and seconded by another.”

The club has a waiting period of 10–15 years and 55–60 new memberships are cleared annually based on seniority.
