Carlos Berlocq set up a second-round clash with fourth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber by beating wild card Gerard Melzer at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Melzer is the younger brother of two-time former champion Jurgen Melzer but could not give the fans a home victory as he went down 6-3 7-6 (7-2) to Argentinian Berlocq.
Viktor Troicki secured a spot in the main draw by beating Ruben Bemelmans in a deciding tie-break but there was disappointment for fast-rising 17-year-old Alexander Zverev, who lost out to fellow German Daniel Brands.
Brands now faces Vasek Pospisil, with the winner to meet second seed Andy Murray in round two.
