General: Outstanding sport personalities to be rewarded


(Sri Lanka Sunday Times Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sri Lanka's top national mobile service provider Mobitel has drawn up plans to reward the top sport personalities in both the boy's and girl's categories who have been outstanding in their respective sports for the year 2014.



This was revealed by Nalin Perera, Senior General Manager, Mobitel Lanka Ltd at a press briefing held recently.

He said that the aim of the Platinum Awards 2014 is to recognize the sportsmen and sportswomen who are the future stars of Sri Lanka.


Speaking further he added that the Platinum Awards 2014 which is dubbed the Oscar of sports awards is unique which is being held for the first time in Sri Lanka and to keep the passion of sports alive and to encourage.

This is not just an award ceremony but a concept to reward the best from the many sports that is played in the school arena in Sri Lanka.

When a request was made to me by the organizers it reminded me of my school days as we never had an opportunity like this but then it's really something worth.

The build up to the Platinum Awards 2014 which is scheduled to be held in end November launched with a road show which will cover 30 locations across the island with the idea of promoting the nominations for the respective sports with the public getting involved to support their candidates.

Twenty one awards recipients will receive awards and four other special awards will be the presented to the master or teacher in charge, the best coach of the year.

The other two special awards will be for the disability sportsperson of the year and best military sportsman/woman of the year.

The rest of the awards list are schools sportsman and sportswoman of the year, school cricketer of the year, best schools sports team, upcoming athlete of the year, university sportsperson of the year, action sportsperson (motor sports), comeback of the year, team of the year, best women cricketer of the year, best cricketer of the year, sportsman and sportswoman of the year, lifetime achievement award, most popular Mobitel sportsman of the year (SMS), best outstation schools sportsman of the year and best schools rugby player of the year.

The nominees of the Mobitel Platinum Awards 2014 will be selected by a high profile panel comprising Dian Gomes, Group Director, MAS Holdings and former President of ABA, Hemaka Amarasuriya, Chairman Singer Sri Lanka, Susanthika Jayasinghe Olympic silver medalist, Sanath Jayasuriya former Sri Lanka cricket captain, Hemasiri Fernando, Chairman NOC, Kishu Gomes, MD/CEO Chevron Caltex, Damayanthi Dharsha, Asian gold medalist, Hashan Tillekeratne, former Sri Lanka cricket captain, Sunil Gunawardena, Asian gold medalist and athletic coach, Dilroy Fernando, International rugby referee, Julian Boling, three time Olympian and Ruwan Kearagala, Director Finance MAS Intimates and President MAS Boxing Association.
