Defending champion Samantha Stosur retained her Japan Open crown with a straight sets win over Zarina Diyas.

The top seed prevailed 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 in Osaka to win her first WTA title of the year, and the third Japan Open crown of her career, after previous successes in 2009 and 2013.

But the Australian was made to work hard by fifth seed Diyas, who broke Stosur's serve in the first game of the match on the way to a 5-3 first set lead.

However, Stosur broke back as the set went to tie-break, only for Diyas to have two set points at 6/5 and 7/6.

Again, the 2010 French Open finalist held her nerve as she won the first set and then broke Diyas' serve in both the first and last games of the second set to retain her crown.
