Yesudas’ jeans comment was not an order but a request from a senior citizen: Suresh Gopi
Actor Suresh Gopi, who was invited as a celebrity guest for a fashion show competition, congratulated the students present for showcasing designs in a way that will make women look more beautiful. The actor also decided to pour his heart out on music legend K J Yesudas’ much discussed comment that women should not wear jeans, as it goes against Indian culture.
He commented, “We should take the words he uttered from a grandfather’s point of view. It was not an order but a request from a senior citizen like him. There is a ‘yo look’ when your wear jeans, which is not apt for an Indian woman; he must have thought so.”
Speaking about the men who cannot control themselves when they see women in jeans, he said, “We know that Yesudas is not such a man who can’t resist himself; and men should have a control over their emotions. “This episode had its effect at my home too. My daughter who wears jeans and is brand conscious likes to show off the name of the brand which is stitched on the right back pocket of the jeans. But as ‘Dasappoopan’ said so, she said, ‘I won't wear it.’’’
The actor felt that if everyone could have thought in the same manner, this wouldn't have been a topic of discussion. “He’s a legend and expressed whatever he has seen and heard so far in order to protect the cultural identity of Indian women.” A woman has the freedom and the right to wear whatever she feels is right, but in the social conditions we’re living in, one should be able to live and present themselves in a way which is not repulsive. “A man or woman should live in a way which does not question the cultural identity of a region; this is not a topic for discussion but we should think for ourselves and act accordingly.”
