PUNE: When IM SL Narayanan started his game against Belarussian GM Kovalev Vladislav, the Indian didn't know what opening his challenger had played, but the Kerala boy was more than happy with the ending.
By winning the fifth-round game of the LIC World Junior chess championships at Hotel Hyatt Pune here, Narayanan (Elo 2420) now shares lead with GMs Jorge Cori (Peru) and Shanglei Lu (China).
Narayanan is the sole Indian in pole position.
And he has a rating performance of 2742 to boot. He is now close to a GM norm. IM N Srinath held GM Vidit Gujrathi to a draw and dented the latter's challenge in the U-20 championships.
